It is said that this spaniel breed was much favored by the Cavalier King Charles and the then royal families of Great Britain in the early 17th century. From there after it got it its name.
It weighs about 10 to 15 pounds and has an average height of 11 to 13 inches. They generally have a life span of 10-15 years approximately. This breed is available in many colors like white-chestnut, reddish brown and white, black and white, or even chocolate brown. They are mainly noticeable because of their huge furry ears that sometimes cover their eyes.
As a pet dog the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is much favored because of its sober nature. It doesn’t take much time to get socialized and to mix with other pets present in the family. It likes human companion and therefore won’t mind to spend time relaxing in the lap of elders or sleeping beside you in your bed. They are somewhat conscious and awake immediately on hearing little sounds or noises.
This breed is much energetic and playful. If your kids get introduced to it then they would like to spend much of their time in playing with them in the backyard. Many dog experts have remarked it as a good hunting dog also. It likes to pursue small animals like rabbits, rats and also birds. It can also serve as a moderate watch dog.
However it’s better if you get Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppies just because it is easier to train them from this stage. Make sure you train them for eating, toilet, behaving with strangers and so on. Take them out for a morning or evening stroll daily as it is good for their health. They are also capable of doing small house work only if you train them accordingly. They need to do some daily exercises.
It is highly recommended that you take good care of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Their body is covered by a soft coat of hairs. Make sure to comb them regularly or else they might get thicker. You need to take them for bathing to keep them clean and tidy. During bathing special dog shampoos can also be used.
Try to keep a close watch on their nails. Trim them off periodically. Also brush their teeth’s at least twice or thrice a week to avoid plaque or other dental problems. Give them all sorts of healthy and nourishing foods specially recommended for dogs. This will give them energy and body fitness.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is vulnerable to eye diseases like cataracts and some common ear problems. Its better you take them to veterinarian immediately if you notice weakness in their body.
